Crooked Man

There was a crooked man and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse.
And they all lived together in a little crooked house

By Mary Jean Iron

Normal day,
let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you,
love you,
bless you before you depart.
Let me not pass you by
in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so.

SLEEPING WITH THE BABY

by JonArno Lawson

I’m sleeping with the baby in the day
because the baby will not sleep at night.
He’s still too small to smile, or to play,
he’s still too small to hold his head upright.

He purses up his lips in little o’s,
he nurses bit by bit, and then he goes
and grows and grows and grows and grows and grows.
How big he’ll finally be, nobody knows.

For sore eyes he’s a very lovely sight.
His brows are worried, but his face is bright.
I love him and his toothless hungry bite,
although he keeps us up, night after night.

Night after night, oh God, night after night.

BIGGER AND BETTER

by JonArno Lawson

I’m going to do something bigger and better,
bigger and better
and bolder, but first,
I’m going to do something
smaller and worse.

TV?

“Watching television can slow the development of children under 3, even when it involves channels aimed specifically at them.”

Television viewing hurts the development of children under 3 years old and poses a certain number of risks, encouraging passivity, slow language acquisition, over-excitedness, troubles with sleep and concentration as well as dependence on screens.

ELEPHANT

by JonArno Lawson

An eloquent elephant
out of its element
said things that others found Mad but Intelligent.

The elephant said, “You may find
me Inelegant,
but I’d rather seem out of my mind
than Irrelevant.”

HUMPTY DUMPTY

by JonArno Lawson

Humpty Deumpty
hid himself
underneath a chicken:

“I’m far from a wall,
so how can I fall?
I’ll never again be stricken

by sad misfortune
or bad luck;
if I fall from this nest
I’ll get right back up....”

Bu then something inside of him started to stir--
he had no idea
what was bound to occur
with that chicken on top of him,

though he knew something odd
was tapping about
right under his fragile skin.

He had no idea,
not the faintest idea,
of the danger
he was now in.

And before the poor fellow
could figure it out,
before he could reason
or voice a doubt,

a crack appeared in his neck--

and he broke apart from within.

from Art & Fear

People with interesting answers are those who ask the interesting questions.

Make objects that talk -- and then listen to them.

Thomas Kuhn Quote

The answers you get depend upon the questions you ask.

Howard Ikemoto Quote

When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college -- that my job was to teach people to draw.
She stared back at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?"

Oscar Wilde quote

City of Bridges

By Terrance Hayes

Representative Doolittle thanks his left hand with his right hand,
Then thanks us, honored he says to have toured a city bridged
By more bridges than there are bridges in any other city in this fine state,
But not saying too much more so that his esteemed colleague,

Representative Hot Rod might say thank you
Representative Droolittle, and then thank us, the constituents,
Of a fine city he says, bridged by more bridges than there are states of the mind,
But not saying too much more so that his esteemed colleague,

Representative Sneakers with Dress Pants might say thank you
Representative Hard Rot and then thank us, the constituents
Of city bridged, he says by more bridges than there are mines in a Coal mining town,
But not saying too much more so that his esteemed colleague,

Representative Eat and Run might say thank you
Representative Sneaks in Dresses and then thank this fine city bridged,
He believes, by more bridges than there are ways to make war an industry,
But not saying too much more so that his esteemed colleagues,

Representative Toy Box and Representative Botox might say
Thank you Representative Eat Runts and sing something
About starlight and reciprocality in two part harmony
While the retired and aspiring representatives wait to say without saying it:

Thank you to the ears, noses and throats of campaign headquarters,
Thank you to the neck tied fork suckers and the little sacks of sugar,
Thank you to the delegates of the delegates and the rulers of abstract truth,
Thank you all for coming out tonight to help us build bridges and cross them

And then cross back and then cross them again before crossing back:
The rivers are deep, we’ve been told. The rivers are wide and needful as money.

The Yellow Cup

By Terrance Hayes

I have been a yellow cup full and empty but also as quiet
As the mouth of a yellow cup waiting for your
Mouth. I have been held in the hands of night’s
Curious machine. I have been a yellow cup holding the hour
That measures nothing. Or measures the night as if
It was nothing and measures the day as if it was milk poured
Into nothing and warmed. If your name is the shape of what it
Fills, fill me. If you are steam unraveling or a scent crawling out,
If you are a mouth divided by speaking or a small brown hand, lift
Me. I have been a yellow cup. If the rain comes, and you put
Me on the sill, I will ask what I did not ask you before.
I will wait anywhere you say in a simple room, but
I will not sleep and I will not remain awake. When you sip your
Tea wearing nothing by the bureau, when you are filled,
The warmth of your thirst will make me thirsty. Pour
Something into my body or make me empty. I have no will
Or I have no more will than a yellow cup this hour
Of the night. You can break me. You can make me clean and filthy.

Summer Sweets

By Meribeth C. Shank

Teri and Sheri are going out to pick raspberries in the garden behind the garage. “We will have raspberry muffins for supper,” says Teri. “We will have butter on hot muffins.”
“Sheri,” says Teri, “you pick at that end. I will start right here. We will meet in the middle.” Sheri walks along the path. She begins to pick at the edge of the raspberry bushes. The prickly stems hurt. There are only a few berries in her pail. Sheri hears squabbling. Four blue jays are sitting on a fence.
“Prickly,” squawk the jays. “Give up.” Sheri runs to Teri.
“Teri,” says Sheri. “These bushes are too prickly. I give up.”
“Let’s try it differently,” says Teri. “Put on these work gloves. Maybe that will help.” Sheri goes back to her pail. She begins to pick. But this time she has to reach farther and she gets scratched.
“Some plan!” screech the jays. “Not enough.” Sheri runs back to Teri.
“This is some plan,” she says, showing the scratches. “This is no way to get enough berries to eat.”

“We have to try again,” says Teri. “Put on this shirt with long sleeves. Maybe that will help.” Sheri puts on the shirt. She goes back to pick again. Her pail has more berries in it, but the berries are harder to reach. Her legs begin to itch from all the scratches.
“Impossible!” shriek the jays. “Go home.” Sheri runs back to Teri.
“These bushes are impossible,” she says. “Let’s take our pails and go back.”
“We’ll give it one more try,” says Teri. “Put on these coveralls. Pull your socks up high, and see if you can fill your pail.” Sheri carefully pulls on the coveralls. She fixes her socks. She even pulls on a cap from the pocket.
Then she begins to pick. Soon she has filled her pail almost full of berries. Sheri stops to chew and swallow a few berries as she and Teri move closer together.
“We’ve got it!” Sheri says, licking her lips.
“Yes!” says Teri. “All it took was gloves, and a long sleeved shirt and coveralls, and socks pulled up high. The cap was a good idea, too.”
The jays fly off the fence, but they cannot reach any berries to eat without getting scratched. Teri and Sheri finish their picking and go whistling into the house to make raspberry muffins for supper — with butter.

Garden of Night

By Elizabeth H. Shank

Come,
walk with me Love,
through the garden of night.

With the curved, golden blade
of the new moon sickle,
I’ll cut Thee a bouquet
of dreams.

Dark Chocolate

By Meribeth C. Shank

With a hungry
mouth,
the moon’s tongue
slices
through
a chocolate sky,
licking
the pudding
bowl of night,
swallowing
darkness
until
all that’s
left
is light.

Imagine--John Lennon

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Tour Daufuskie

By Terrance Hayes

In that small coastal town
in the last century
during one of its tropical storms

people tied to the necks
of pine trees drowned

when the wires and whips
and webs and ropes of
rain covered their bodies

so that when our small golf cart crept
along the dirt back roads

and we paused to
photo the AME church
and one room schoolhouse
and small shacks of
the black folk of Daufuskie

no voices trailed us
or floated out to greet us.

Sometimes now
the trunk of a tree
resembles the waist
or a black body;

sometimes your naked waist
still and rooted before me,
smells thick and sweet
as the freshly cut meat of a pine.

Woman, Woman, Woman, when I knock
against you, it is like swimming
from the world

out to the small island of Daufuskie
in the witching hour of a storm,
like drowning in the arms of a tree.

DeFund the Iraq War

The American Friends Service Committee is calling for Congress to bring the U.S. Troops home from Iraq and to take care of their needs upon return. Congress can stop the war by refusing to fund it.

Taxpayers have already spent more than $1 trillion for the first four years of the war. Every day that the war continues adds $720 million to that tally. This money should be spent in more effective and humane ways: aid to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, an eventual Iraqi-led repair and reconstruction, and funding vital needs -- such as health care, jobs, and education -- here in the United States.

While our government spent $1 trillion on a misguided war, Congress and the Administration have cut funding for vital services at home in the name of fiscal "restraint." Between 2002 and 2006, dozens of federal programs have been cut, including Head Start, the Community Food and Nutrition program, youth job training, affordable housing, and maternal and child health programs. The official number of people living in poverty in the U.S. gre from 34.6 to 37 million between 2002 and 2005, and 1.5 million people lost their health insurance. We need to make it clear: We want our tax dollars spent on critical human needs both here and in Iraq!

Beannacht - "Blessing"

ON THE DAY WHEN
THE WEIGHT DEADENS
ON YOUR SHOULDERS
AND YOU STUMBLE,
MAY THE CLAY DANCE
TO BALANCE YOU.

AND WHEN YOUR EYES
FREEZE BEHIND
THE GRAY WINDOW
AND THE GHOST OF LOSS
GETS IN TO YOU,
MAY A FLOCK OF COLORS,
INDIGO, RED, GREEN
AND AZURE BLUE
COME TO AWAKEN IN YOU
A MEADOW OF DELIGHT.

WHEN THE CANVAS FRAYS
IN THE CURACH OF THOUGHT
AND A STAIN OF OCEAN
BLACKENS BENEATH YOU,
MAY THERE COME ACROSS THE WATERS
A PATH OF YELLOW MOONLIGHT
TO BRING YOU SAFELY HOME.

MAY THE NOURISHMENT OF THE EARTH BE YOURS,
MAY THE CLARITY OF LIGHT BE YOURS,
MAY THE FLUENCY OF THE OCEAN BE YOURS,
MAY THE PROTECTION OF THE ANCESTORS BE YOURS,

AND SO MAY A SLOW
WIND WORK THESE WORDS
OF LOVE AROUND YOU,
AN INVISIBLE CLOAK
TO MIND YOUR LIFE.

Anyone Else But You

You're a part time lover and a full time friend
The monkey on you're back is the latest trend
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

I kiss you on the brain in the shadow of a train
I kiss you all starry eyed, my body's swinging from side to side
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Here is the church and here is the steeple
We sure are cute for two ugly people
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

The pebbles forgive me, the trees forgive me
So why can't, you forgive me?
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

I will find my nitch in your car
With my mp3 DVD rumple-packed guitar
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Du du du du du du dudu
Du du du du du du dudu
Du du du du du du dudu du

Up up down down left right left right B A start
Just because we use cheats doesn't mean we're not smart
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

You are always trying to keep it real
I'm in love with how you feel
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

We both have shiny happy fits of rage
You want more fans, I want more stage
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Don Quixote was a steel driving man
My name is Adam I'm your biggest fan
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

Squinched up your face and did a dance
You shook a little turd out of the bottom of your pants
I don't see what anyone can see, in anyone else
But you

not much to say
but that's ok
don't have to talk
could go on a walk
it's being together
it's sharing our time
it's learning

it's love
that fits like a glove

May 2000 College Graduation Speach

Hey, I'm Justin Shank, but
that could be a misnomer
Cause most people that know me
just call me by Homer

They've asked me to speak
to you all here tonight
so I'll take up 3 minutes
and give you insight

on my life for 4 years
and the things I have done
the good and the bad
the boring and the fun.

My GC experience
has taught me to learn
not only in classes
but everywhere that I turn.

I came to this campus
along with you all
and I had a 3 person room
on Yoder First hall

I wasn't naïve
just a little bit young
but I'm sure there were people
who thought I was quite dumb

But, I scored a great job
that wasn't too hard
I worked Saturday mornings
as a GC security Guard

When I came to GC
math seemed my forte
but then I took calculus
and had no time to play

so I decided that an
Art Major was the direction for me
and I've learned quite a bit
from Marvin, Jon, and Judy

I pulled some good grades
though I partied a lot
I managed to keep up
though studious I was not.

But one night in jail
taught me the lesson I would need
that irresponsibility
would not help me succeed

SST called my name
as my second year started
so I boarded the bus
and for Costa Rica departed

I learned to speak Spanish
in the capital of San Jose
then our unit went to Nicaragua
where for service I stayed

I realized a lot
about the meaning of riches
when I walked down the street
and saw people sleeping in ditches

When I returned to the states
I had a new view
I started working harder
and I grew up some too.

I was hired as a coach
for a kids soccer team
it was a whole lotta fun
though winning was only a dream

I also held a job on
the LaCasa construction crew
I helped build 10 new houses
and remodeled several too.

I've influenced sarcasm
with those guys from K2
I gave smamounts
and they gave you goooood

I spent my last May term
studying Theology
traveling the countryside
and staying in Guatemala City

I travelled some afterwards
to see all of the sights
and what Hurricane Mitch
destroyed in several nights

I volunteered for a month
to work with MCC
and help with the building of
a Latin American Seminary.

I've had friends get married
and a couple that have died
I've laughed with them all
and with a few I have cried

I've spent the last year
living just down the street
with the boys of Fire House
who are so cool and so sweet

To broaden my horizons
I gave all clases a chance
Biology, Sociology
Bib. Lit. and folk dance

I've studied the works of
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
and read the philosophy of
Madelaine L'Engle

I've piddled with radio
announcing some sports
and also some music
and things of that sort

I'm on Record staff
though it's a minor position
putting the Record on the internet
is my weekly mission

I'm an intermural sports junkie
I play all that I can
and in B league basketball
my team's the best in the land

I've seen fingers chopped off
and trains get derailed
I was around for the kegger
for which Shuba got nailed

I've seen an Aerosmith concert
I've performed in Kick Off
I've sang Jimmy Buffet
and I've slept in a loft

I've been through power outages
hail storms and blizzards
as well as the LBGA controversy
that's got you all by the gizzards

I've eaten the food
that they serve in the rot
and survived on just coffee
more often than not.

through 4 years of college
I've spent my time growing
though so has the bill
that I will soon end up owing

And in my years at GC
I've gotten quite wise
and I realize that my friendships
are the thing I most prize

so if there's one thing to remember
before you all leave
it's to keep track of the relationships
that you've got up your sleeve

I've been working my butt off
to prepare my senior art show
April 9 is the opening
I hope you can go.

One thing to remember
and for me it's quite key
that on May 21st
I will get my degree.

PELICAN

by Lois Lenski

Wise old pelican
bunched on a stump
watching and waiting
ready to jump.

Huge old bill
big deep pouch
sits there sleeping--
mean old grouch.

Hunger gnaws
fisherman baiting
pelican turns
tired of waiting.

Fish leaps up--
gone in a flash
pelican swallows
makes a big splash.

Wings outspread
back to the stump
to watch and wait
ready to jump.

Fish is gone
pelican winks--
Nobody knows
what he thinks.

APPRECIATE AMERICA

The enemy from within is TWICE as dangerous as the one from without. Report all un-american activities to your superior officer or director of the federal bureau of investigation.

DO YOUR SHARE

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not
so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
