SLEEPING WITH THE BABY

by JonArno Lawson

I’m sleeping with the baby in the day
because the baby will not sleep at night.
He’s still too small to smile, or to play,
he’s still too small to hold his head upright.

He purses up his lips in little o’s,
he nurses bit by bit, and then he goes
and grows and grows and grows and grows and grows.
How big he’ll finally be, nobody knows.

For sore eyes he’s a very lovely sight.
His brows are worried, but his face is bright.
I love him and his toothless hungry bite,
although he keeps us up, night after night.

Night after night, oh God, night after night.
